Alaska ICE Projects The Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) continues to offer the Quality Schools / Quality Students (QS2) service to our member school districts. QS2 is a comprehensive school improvement service that assists school districts and their local communities in raising student achievement to meet or exceed state standards by linking a shared vision for education with successful practices. As the youth advocacy/community engagement branch of AASB, Alaska ICE works with community members and district personnel to develop strategies and activities that build upon the strengths found in each community related to Asset Building and community engagement. When this is combined with a district inventory and strategic planning, AASB believes that QS2 will facilitate measurable improvement in student achievement. Alaska ICE has been working with the Bering Strait School District (BSSD) through the 21st Century Learning Grant since 2001. During the last three years, Alaska ICE has seen wonderful support and asset building efforts already in place for youth throughout the district. There is tremendous potential for an ongoing effort to make the Bering Strait a powerful force in youth advocacy. Northwest Arctic Borough and School District In the spring of 2003, the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) entered into a project with the Northwest Arctic Borough and School District to promote and implement the Youth Developmental Assets Framework in that region. As the community engagement/youth advocacy branch of AASB, Alaska ICE is working with district personnel and community members to schedule visits and deliver assets presentations in each city or village throughout the district. What are the most important behaviors adults can engage in to build relationships with youth? How many adults are actually performing those behaviors? Grading Grown-Ups - Alaskan Style seeks to answer those questions. The Caring and Connected School Summit was held on Friday, October 10th at the Hotel Captain Cook. The first steps in establishing principles and elements of caring and connected Alaskan schools were brought forth. AASB's Alaska ICE staff gathered with the honored guests, all recognized teachers, counselors, principals, superintendents and school board members of the year to talk about the characteristics of caring teachers, caring classrooms and caring schools, and what impact caring has on developing assets in students Alaska ICE will be holding a Training of Promoters and Storytellers (TOPS) for arts organizations that work with youth and adults. Following this workshop, Alaska ICE will partner with five arts organizations throughout Alaska that believe they can and will make a positive difference for the youth in their communities. These organizations will be asked to work with both adults and youth to take intentional steps toward creating communities of support, and toward promoting the Assets Framework. |
