United Way of Anchorage
by Staff
12-8-2008

Half of Alaska’s population can be found in the greater Anchorage area. To reach this sizeable number of people, Alaska ICE has partnered with United Way of Anchorage to provide workshops, support and technical assistance to individuals, businesses, and organizations, spreading the message of community engagement and asset building throughout Alaska’s largest city.

Alaska ICE’s longstanding partnership with United Way of Anchorage, which supported an Anchorage-based assets trainer for five years, has evolved into an enlarged partnership, including Boys and Girls Club as a new partner. By pooling resources, Anchorage has been able to hire a Youth Development Specialist, who is coordinating a High/Scope Youth Development Learning Academy to work toward the goal of changing conditions for youth through capacity building of youth service workers. Twenty-four youth service workers attended the academy representing agencies such as: Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Alaska Youth and Parent Foundation, Covenant House of Alaska, ATMI, NineStar Education and Employment Services, Division of Juvenile Justice/McLaughlin Youth Center, Boys and Girls Club, Parachutes Teen Center, Alaska Children’s Services, and others.

In addition, United Way, Anchorage School District and 28 other agencies and organizations created the Anchorage Youth Development Coalition, a collective of youth-serving and youth-friendly non-profits and organizations in Anchorage, which has now adopted the assets framework as its charter principles.

Anchorage earned the honor of being among the top "100 Best Communities for Young People" in a 2005 nationwide survey, in part, because of the support the community demonstrates through collaborations such as the Anchorage Youth Development Coalition (AYDC).
